A part from being a satire of
James Bond, Austin Powers also represents the archetypal
1960s mod, with his constant advocacy for free love, his use
of obscure impressions & his clothing style (including
crushed velvet
suits & Beatle boots).
E! Entertainment declared the first Austin Powers film to be
the 65th reason why the 1990's ruled in one of their 101
countdowns.

Austin Powers Costume
Sir Austin Danger Powers,
KBE, is a
fictional character from the
Austin Powers series of films.
He first appeared in the 60s-themed
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) & is
portrayed by Mike Myers.
Cryogenically frozen in the
late 1960s, Austin Powers is thawed out just before the Millennium to do
battle with his nemesis (and brother) Dr. Evil. Subsequent films are
The Spy Who Shagged Me
(1999) & Goldmember (2002).
Meyers is known for his
ability to play multiple characters; in addition to Austin Powers, in
the series he also plays Dr. Evil, Dr. Evil’s morbidly obese henchman,
Fat Bastard, & the titular character from the third film, Goldmember.
A fourth film in the Austin
Powers franchise is rumored
to be in pre-production as of
2009.
Powers was born on
12 November 1939,
son of Nigel Dick Powers (Michael Caine), & brother of Douglas "Dougie"
Powers, also known as Dr. Evil. Austin & Dougie's mother died in an
assassination attempt when they were babies, separating them in the
process. Austin grew up with his father, & went on to attend an
espionage boarding school with Dougie (now known as Dr. Evil), his
roommate &, unbeknownst to him,
his brother. While at
boarding school, he was awarded the title of International Man of
Mystery, much to the dismay of Dougie. This
event would destroy the
relationship between the two & cause
them to become enemies.
Following his schooling,
Powers went on to join the Ministry of Defense & become a famous spy.
After exiling Dr. Evil to space, Austin was cryopreserved in 1967 in
case Dr. Evil should return from space. Eventually, Dr. Evil returned &
Austin was unfrozen & partnered
with Miss Kensington, whom he
believed was the daughter of Austin's former partner Mrs. Kensington.
Once he had been unfrozen, they
started their adversarial
relationship while he attempted to adjust
to the culture shock of
losing 30 years' worth of time.

Mike Myers as Dr. Evil
Dr. Evil (born
Douglas "Dougie" Powers) is a fictional character, played by
Mike Myers in the Austin Powers film series. He is
the chief villain of the movies, and Austin Powers' nemesis
with aspirations of world domination. He is a parody of any
number of James Bond villains, primarily Donald Pleasance's
Ernst Stavro Blofeld of SPECTRE. Dr. Evil routinely hatches
schemes to terrorize and take over the world, and is
typically accompanied by his cat Mr. Bigglesworth and his
side-kick Mini-Me.
The scar on his
face is a reference to similar scars on early 20th century
movie villains such as several portrayed by Erich von
Stroheim (as well as a homage to Donald Pleasance as Blofeld
in You Only Live Twice). This type of scar was
usually a remnant of Mensur fencing, an activity in which
secretive elite European student groups participate. In
Goldmember it is revealed that he has a tattoo on his
buttocks that reads "E. Diddy" and he also claimed to have
three testicles. Dr. Evil also tends to get angry when he is
referred to as "Mr. Evil" and then proceeds to say that
"[he] didn't spend six years in evil medical school to be
called 'Mr'".
In the first
Austin Powers film and half of the second, Dr. Evil's
eyes are brown, but in the third, Mike Myers wore contact
lenses to give his eyes an icy blue color.
On May 10, 2007, Mike Myers announced the he was developing
the 4th film in the Austin Powers universe; it is focused
more on the character of Dr. Evil.

Dr. Evil Costume
In Goldmember, Nigel
Powers reveals that Dr. Evil is Austin Powers' twin brother and that his
real name is Douglas ("Dougie") Powers. He was born on November 12,
1939. Douglas and Austin were separated as babies following a car
explosion, and that he thought that only Austin had survived. Douglas
was raised by Belgians, which is what made him so complex and evil. His
home town is Bruges, a Dutch-speaking town (despite this, he claims to
not know how to speak "Freaky-Deaky Dutch").
He also attended the British
Intelligence Academy with Austin (along with Basil Exposition and Number
2), and is angered that Austin won the "International Man of Mystery"
award, while he, the academy's best student was overlooked .
In the first film, Dr. Evil
is an internationally known criminal genius cryogenically frozen in 1967
and reawakened in 1997. Like Austin Powers, he faces challenges in
acclimating to the new period. He often places his little finger near
his mouth, especially when excited or to emphasize a statement. Although
expanded upon, this signature move may have been taken from "Number 12
Looks Just Like You," an episode of The Twilight Zone in which
Dr. Rex uses the same gesture several times. Although the idiosyncrasy
was intended to be a humorous "signature move" for Evil, the only
apparent reason for Rex's use of it was to differentiate him from
several other characters (played by the same actor) who were
intentionally physically identical to him. Evil also repetitively uses
the euphemism frickin'. He occasionally uses unnecessary finger
quotes around now-familiar technical terms such as laser.
Mini-Me Costume
Verne Troyer as Mini-Me
Before Dr. Evil was sent back
in time to 1969, his minions made him a clone. The clone was identical
in every way but was "one-eighth his size". Upon being introduced to his
clone, Dr. Evil immediately declared, "Breathtaking. I shall call him...
Mini-Me". Mini-Me has almost no dialogue in the films, beyond an
occasional frightened "eeeeee!". He also likes to lip-synch the
occasional line when Dr. Evil raps. On most other occasions, Mini-Me
prefers to express himself through written notes. Mini-Me is a parody of
Nick-Nack, Scaramanga's dwarf henchman in The Man With The Golden Gun.
Mini-Me has a pet called
Mini-Mr. Bigglesworth, which he sometimes tries to eat, a kitten version
of Dr. Evil's cat. He loves Belgian chocolate and terrorizing Scott
Evil, Dr. Evil's son and rival for his affection. He is sometimes
referred to and treated as a dog or other small object. Scott refers to
him as "That vicious little... Chihuahua thing".
Despite his small size,
Mini-Me is a powerful and effective fighter, once giving Austin Powers a
considerable thrashing, until the spy took advantage of his small size,
and flushed him out of space toilet.
A memorable gag had him
passing a series of notes to Foxxy Cleopatra, first stating she was so
beautiful, she must be the clone of an angel. When she smilingly
disagreed, the second note asked if she was sure she didn't have a
little clone in her. The third asked if she'd like to. As seen by Nigel
Powers' reaction to Mini-Me's genitals ("My Word! You're a tripod!" and
"If you ever get tired, you can use it as a kickstand"), he seems to
have a large penis, which may or may not also fall under the "1/8" rule. |
